The Women’s Day Pink Cyclothon: A Community Unleashing Potential Across India

In the spirit of celebrating female strength and equality, the nation gathered once again on March 9, 2025, to celebrate the Women’s Day Pink Cyclothon edition of Fit India Sundays. This event not only highlighted the achievements of Indian cycling enthusiasts but also showcased their potential to become global champions. Joining Manisha Moun, a former boxer and an Indian international cyclist, along with 13 other stars from the Asian Track Cycling Championships in Malaysia, the ride marked another significant step forward for women’s cycling.

The Event: A Platform for Unconditional Pursuit of Competitiveness

The Women’s Day Pink Cyclothon was organized by Fit India Sundays, a campaign championed by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, and Smt. Meeta Lochan, Secretary, Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). This initiative aimed to empower women in cycling through awareness, education, and support, ultimately shaping the future of this sport.

The ride was held at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in Delhi, with over 400 participants across the country. It was a significant turnup for Indian cycling enthusiasts, who had come together under the theme of equality and inclusivity. The event not only celebrated their achievements but also inspired young athletes to take on competitive challenges that others may struggle with.

The Team: From Manipur to Trivandrum

The journey from home to world was a testament to perseverance. Young participants from Manipur, David Beckham’s hometown, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the students of Trivandrum also made their mark. Ronaldo Singh, an Indian cycling star with four medals under him in recent Asian Track Cycling Championships, spoke highly of the reach of Fit India Sundays on Cycle.

The Pan-India Reach

The number of young cyclists participating at the event was unprecedented. Since December 2024, over 4200 locations across the country had been reached, including Manipur, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Trivandrum, and remote parts of India. These participants were chosen for their dedication and commitment to cycling as a sport.

The Motivation

Ronaldo’s quote resonated deeply: “All our young athletes are getting so many medals internationally and we have more competitions to come…” It highlighted the potential of women in cycling to achieve greatness beyond just boxing. Cycling, like many sports, requires discipline, hard work, and a passion for overcoming obstacles.

The Cycle Ride

The ride was divided into three parts: the morning run, the afternoon run (the pink cycle), and the evening run. The pink cycle, a special event reserved for women to showcase their sport’s diversity. With runners-up like Ananya Shukla, Dolly Pandey, and Sharmila Sainath from Manipur leading the way, participants were reminded of the importance of teamwork and resilience.

The Future: A Call to Action

The Women’s Day Pink Cyclothon not only celebrated achievements but also inspired a new generation of cyclists. It emphasized that women’s cycling has the potential to make an indelible mark in the world. By participating in this event, they can lead others on their journey toward becoming champions.

Conclusion

The Women’s Day Pink Cyclothon was more than just a ride; it was a movement. It highlighted the power of inclusivity and equality in sports, inspiring young cyclists to embrace competitive challenges with unwavering determination. As we move forward, perhaps even further apart, this spirit of equality will be the foundation for the future of women’s cycling. Together, let us ensure that every cyclist has the chance to shine—females included.

Remember: Cycling is for everyone!
