In the hearts of Odisha, a region known for its rich natural resources and dynamic economic landscape, lies the story of Shri. Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs. His latest visit to Bhubaneswar has been a significant milestone in Odisha’s efforts towards power sector development.

During his meeting with senior officials of Odisha’s Government of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri. Manohar Lal assured that achieving fly ash utilization targets would require a joint effort from the Ministries of Coal, Environment, and Railways. He emphasized the need for comprehensive planning, including the provision of adequate rail rakes for long-distance transportation of fly ash. This move underscores Odisha’s commitment to sustainable energy sources and future-proofing its power sector.

Current Power Capacity

Odisha currently operates 20 GW of coal-based thermal power capacity, with an additional 10 GW pipeline expected to be commissioned over the next five–six years. The state is actively exploring pit-head thermal power plants through joint ventures with General Electric Co. (GENCOs) from other states.

Transmission Infrastructure Progress

The Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) has made significant strides in addressing RoW issues, which are critical for ensuring efficient power distribution across cities like Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The state’s strategy to strengthen transmission infrastructure is a testament to its determination in building a resilient power grid.

Power Allocation

Shri. Manohar Lal assured that Odisha will receive adequate power from Phase-II of NLCIL’s Talabira Thermal Power Project, aligning with Ministry of Power guidelines. While this effort is commendable, it highlights the need for similar support from other states to ensure a balanced and sustainable energy mix.

Conclusion

Shri. Manohar Lal’s visit reflects the Centre’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Odisha’s power infrastructure and fostering sustainable growth in the sector. His efforts are not only focused on enhancing existing capabilities but also setting a clear path for future development, aligning with broader initiatives like the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). This initiative aims to create a resilient energy landscape that supports both local and national economic development.

Conclusion

Shri. Manohar Lal’s visit is a crucial step in Odisha’s journey towards sustainable power sector development. His assurance of comprehensive planning, including contributions from other states, underscores the Centre’s desire to build a balanced energy sector. This progress not only benefits Odisha but also paves the way for future initiatives that will ensure the region’s energy security and economic resilience.
