In a heartfelt speech delivered today at the prestigious National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) seminar organized by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, a renowned scholar and expert in maritime history and heritage conservation, has issued a vision of NMHC as the “quoin” of India’s seafaring legacy. Rooted in ancient traditions, NMHC is not just a physical infrastructure but a cultural hub that connects history with modernity.

The seminar, held at the port complex in Lothal, showcased the intellectual insights and expert discussions from scholars and experts across diverse fields such as archaeology, maritime history, and culture. The event highlighted India’s rich maritime heritage, spanning over centuries of trade, navigation, and exploration, while also delving into its interactions with other cultural traditions like Greek and Roman civilizations, Southeast Asia, and the intricate tapestry of social and economic practices.

Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized that NMHC is more than a physical place—it’s a symbol of India’s resilience, ingenuity, and rich cultural exchange. He argued that by fostering collaboration between scholars, experts, and global partners, NMHC can serve as a beacon of knowledge, guiding the nation towards future opportunities in maritime research and education.

The seminar also underscored the importance of interdisciplinary approaches—combining history, science, language, and culture to build a comprehensive understanding of India’s maritime heritage.Sonowal stressed that NMHC should remain closely aligned with PM Modi’s vision for ‘Vikas Bhi, Viraat Bhi,’ embedding its mission not just in maritime research but also in preserving India’s seafaring legacy for generations to come.

In closing, Sonowal highlighted the global significance of NMHC—a collaboration that could transform the ocean into a hub for innovation, conservation, and cultural exchange. Through its seminars like this one, the Ministry hopes to inspire a new generation of scholars and thinkers who can shape an enduring vision of maritime heritage tailored to the evolving world we live in today.
