The Indian Navy’s Vision for maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region

In an effort to secure their future, the Indian Navy has taken significant strides in maritime cooperation with navies across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Over ten years, these initiatives aim to strengthen their role as the preferred security partner and first responder in IOR. This blog will explore two key efforts: IOS Sagar and AIKEYME, highlighting their significance and how they contribute to regional stability.

1. The Vision of a Preferred Security Partner

The Indian Navy is committed to enhancing maritime security within IOR, driven by the Government of India’s vision known as Securage (SAGAR). Through extensive partnerships with navies in IOR countries, the Navy ensures that maritime safety and growth are prioritized.

2. The Journey of Sagar

IOS Sagar is an initiative aimed at deepening cooperation, deploying a ship to the Southwest IOR by April 2025. This ship, INS Sunayna, will undergo training sessions with FFCs in six-week classes, engaging in port calls and observance activities. The ship’s deployment stops in key locations such as Dar-es-Salaam and Port Louis, ensuring robust regional monitoring.

3. The Quest for AIKEYME

AIKEYME, or Africa India Key Maritime Engagement, is a multilateral exercise combining Indian and African navies to tackle maritime threats like piracy. Conducting this exercise in mid-April 2025 at TTPDF, the ceremony will feature six-day activities, including TableTop and Command Post exercises on piracy and info sharing. The Sea Phase includes training, VBSS, small arms firing, and rescue operations, fostering internaval cooperation.

4. The Key Roles Involved

  • Indian Navy Fish and Craft Forces (FFCs) – Essential for port calls, security, and maritime responsibilities.
  • Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Force (TPDF) – Co-hosting the AIKEYME exercise to leverage African capabilities in maritime cooperation.

5. The Significance of These Initiatives

These initiatives underscore India’s commitment to regional security and economic growth. Through these partnerships, India enhances its role as a preferred security partner and first responder, strengthening regional ties. This collaboration not only contributes to SAGAR but also fosters global interdependence, positioning India as a key player in the region’s maritime landscape.

Conclusion:

The Indian Navy’s initiatives like IOS Sagar and AIKEYME demonstrate their dedication to maritime security and regional stability. These efforts highlight their vision of strengthening partnerships across oceans, driving growth, and fostering economic development. As these exercises continue, we can expect further contributions to the region’s security and prosperity.

This blog concludes with a forward-looking perspective, encouraging readers to stay updated on future developments or join involved in these impactful initiatives.
