DRI Breaks New Ground in Mizo Region
In a significant milestone this year, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has taken a novel approach in its drug operations, breaking the world record by capturing methamphetamine tablets worth Rs. 52.67 crore from Mizoram. A late-night operation on April 11, 2025, intercepted a 12-wheeler truck hidden within the folds of a tarpaulin cover. The packet, weighing over 30 kg, was packed with inscriptions such as “3030 Export Only” and “999,” alongside diamond symbols and orange-pink tablets.
Detailed Insights:
The truck, originating from Zokhawthar near the Indo-Myanmar frontier and en route to Tripura, was transported cement from Meghalaya to Champhai before loading with contraband. DRI agents confirmed the tablets contained methamphetamine using a specialized kit. They were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, while preliminary investigations indicate the drugs were smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar via Zokhawthar.
The DRI has collected over 148 kg of methamphetamine since January 2025. This operation is part of a larger initiative by DRI to combat drug smuggling across the border region, with other border towns under their surveillance.
Significance and Future Moves:
This breakthrough by DRI not only solidifies their commitment to law enforcement but also highlights their role in disrupting drug trafficking. As noted elsewhere, DRI has targeted border regions, including Aizawl, Mizoram, Tripura, and Zokhawthar, which are key points of entry for smugglers from Myanmar.
In conclusion, the success of this operation underscores DRI’s dedication to law enforcement and their strategic approach in maintaining the integrity of international trade. Moving forward, they will continue to push the envelope in their fight against drug trafficking.
