DRDO Conducts Successful Release Trials of Long-Range Glide Bomb ‘Gaurav’ From Su-30 MKI Aircraft

In an effort to further enhance its capabilities in the realm of long-range gliding bombs, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the Release Trials of the Long-Range Glide Bomb (‘Gaurav’) from the SU-30 MKI aircraft between April 8–10, 2025. These trials were conducted at a strategic location on Island B in the Indian Ocean, ensuring a seamless integration and testing process.

The Target: A 1,000 KG Class Glide Bomb

The ‘Gaurav’ is a 1,000 kg class glide bomb designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat, Arithmetic Research Establishment, and Integrated Test Range, Chandipur. This success marks a significant milestone in DRDO’s research capabilities.

Key Features of the LRGB ‘Gaurav’

  • Range Capacity: The system achieved range close to 100 kilometers, demonstrating impressive precision.
  • Pin-Point Accuracy: During trials, it successfully delivered a pinpoint delivery capability, ensuring precise targeting at various targets on the island.
  • Landing Capabilities: The test aircraft was landable in 3–5 minutes, showcasing advanced mobility and agility.

The Testing Process

DRDO’s involvement in these trials was meticulous. Senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Air Force (IAF) participated actively during the testing phase. This collaboration underscored the importance of cross-functional teamwork and shared responsibilities to ensure a successful outcome.

Supporting Organizations

The success of the ‘Gaurav’ release trials was underpinned by robust support from key organizations:

  • Adani Defence Systems & Technologies: A global defense contractor providing advanced technology.
  • Bharat Forge: A state-of-the-art manufacturing and production partner.
  • Development-cum-Production Partners (DCPP) - Adani Defence Systems & Technologies, Bharat Forge: The foundation of the system’s development.

Participating Participants

The trials were conducted by the SU-30 MKI aircraft, which is already operating in India. The Indian Air Force and DRDO’s research teams collaborated closely to refine and test the ‘Gaurav’ bomb.

Recognized for Success

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, a prominent figure in Indian Defence andTechnology, complimented DRDO and IAF on the successful trials of the ‘Gaurav’. He highlighted the significance of these trials in advancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces. Similarly, Secretary R.D.S. (DoD) R & D, along with Chairman DRDO, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, congratulated DRDO for its efforts in delivering a high-tech product.

A Step Toward Induction

The achievements from these trials are paving the way for eventual induction of the LRGB ‘Gaurav’ into the IAF. This is a crucial step forward in DRDO’s journey towards becoming a key player in India’s defense ecosystem, ensuring that it continues to meet the evolving needs of the country.

Conclusion

The successful release trials conducted by DRDO on April 8–10, 2025, mark an exciting milestone in its research capabilities. The ‘Gaurav’ glide bomb, a 1,000 kg class device with impressive range and pin-point accuracy, is set to play a pivotal role in the nation’s defense infrastructure. These trials underscore the commitment of DRDO and IAF to push the boundaries of technology and innovation.
