C-DOT & CSIR-NPL Sign MoU for Collaborative Research in Classical & Quantum Communications

Introduction

In an effort to advance indigenous capabilities in classical and quantum communication technologies, C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics) and CSIR-NPL (Central Science and Research Laboratory - National Physical Laboratory) have announced a significant milestone with their MoU signing. This collaboration is designed to foster joint research and innovation, focusing on areas such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), standardization, single-photon sources, detectors, EIT-based systems, and FPGA-based control electronics.

C-DOT, India’s premier telecom R&D institution under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is dedicated to driving innovation in telecommunications, including switching systems, network protocols, IoT, M2M (Multiple Mobile Access) technologies, wireless communications, and quantum communication. CSIR-NPL, the National Metrology Institute (NMI) of India, has a rich legacy of conducting cutting-edge research in metrology, materials science, and environmental sciences.

The primary objective of this MoU is to establish a long-term collaborative framework that supports research, development, standardization, and delivery of next-generation communication technologies. C-DOT brings deep expertise in network protocols, IoT, software applications, quantum communications, while CSIR-NPL contributes unmatched capabilities in scientific measurement, standards, and traceability.

Collaborative Research Support:

In addition to joint R&D efforts, the MoU promotes academic exchange and knowledge sharing through guest lectures, workshops, seminars, and collaborative teaching initiatives. Faculty, researchers, and students from both organizations will have opportunities to engage in cross-institutional learning and skill development. Furthermore, a strong emphasis is placed on intellectual property management, with a commitment to developing a joint framework defining ownership, usage rights, and publication guidelines.

Signing Ceremony and Messages:

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, highlighted the critical role of quantum communications in safeguarding data and ensuring the integrity of critical information infrastructure. He stated, “Quantum communication represents the next frontier in safeguarding data and ensuring the integrity of critical information infrastructure.
